Although people may differ from this analogy, people often refer to life as a game. But one similar trait shared between a story mode video game and real life, is that there are turning points where people excel. In video games, this is referred to as a “checkpoint". A character will get defeated by so many obstacles. Sometimes, they will even have to start the game over. However, the character eventually builds the strength to finally reach that checkpoint in that challenging level, and even exceed past it. So even when it’s “game over”, lessons are learned and memories are saved. The train tracks stretched across the edge of Oakland are used to symbolically represent that Shy’an has endured countless obstacles to finally reach a point where she is ready to walk the path that allows her to move beyond her trauma and inaccurate expectations of her as an outcast. When she says “Don’t worry about me, I’ll figure it out from here”...she means every single word.
